Unmoving Great Patchy – Antihero [Third GK]

Hi, kitties!

I bring you another garage-kit post—this time about a recast of Griffon’s Patchouli.

Why her in particular? I decided to get her for one purpose only: to practice working neatly (mission failed, but lessons were learned). Honestly, neither the figure herself nor the photos on the site looked especially appealing (as is generally the case with most of Griffon’s Touhou figures). I simply wanted something I could slowly sand, shape, and paint in my spare time, without any passion. The kit arrived in March; I opened it to see what was what, closed it again, and put it aside indefinitely. Then, at the end of April, I happened across the game Scarlet Curiosity, ran into Patchy (and got stuck on her ), and after a couple of evenings of fruitless attempts to beat her, I picked up the GK. So much for my plan to work on it without emotion. I have to say, if I’d felt nothing for the character, the result would have been something else entirely—to put it mildly. All in all, the process from start to finish didn’t even take two weeks; more precisely, it took a few weekend days (since I only worked on it at weekends, in a specially designated place))).

Here’s what I started with: 32 parts, hair in four pieces, and a two-piece cape that caused me no small amount of pain.

The recast stood out for its fairly decent parts fit and its own good, solid pegs. I didn’t need pins at all, and I glued only a couple of parts, mostly just to be safe.

I didn’t like the eyes on the original version at all, or the silly-looking half-open mouth, so I started looking for a way to change her expression and make the parted lips less conspicuous.

image, but the catlike pupils were rejected and transformed into normal ones instead. The eyes were difficult; brushes in sizes 0 and 00 were eventually joined by an Edding 0.05 pen that I bought rather late. In my opinion, it managed to salvage things, but in future I’ll definitely use the pen right from the start.

I admired and delighted in the colors until I realized Patchy was turning out purple-purple I decided to tint the hair lilac; successfully, in my opinion.

The main lesson I took away is that even if the parts seem to be of acceptable quality, you have to sand, sand, sand. This time I didn’t strip anything and did it all in one pass, although I really shouldn’t have rushed—ah, it’s all about passion...

Overall, I’m happy with the work. Next I’d like to try a custom; we’ll see what comes of that idea.
